Capsule Geology

The Lakeview occurrence area is located on the east flank of Wilson Mountain and straddles Barren Creek, a tributary of the Bulkley River, and a series of small lakes which include Wilson Lake, about 10 kilometres northeast of Houston.

The showing occurs in Lower Jurassic Hazelton Group volcanics of the Telkwa Formation which consist of andesitic to rhyolitic flows, tuffs, and breccias with minor intercalated limestone. Locally, the volcanics are moderately to intensely silicified, chloritized and epidotized with abundant specular hematite. The volcanics are crosscut by mafic dikes which trend northwest and dip near vertically. The post-mineral mafic dikes average 1.3 metres in width and show limonitic alteration on surface.

Vein system mineralization occurs in grey-green, unsorted fragmental breccia which hosts chalcopyrite and black sphalerite with quartz, carbonate, and hematite gangue. Mineralization is associated with the silicification of bedded, Hazelton rhyolitic pyroclastics with intercalated limestone-specular hematite beds. The length of the mineralized zone is in excess of 400 metres along a strike of 040 degrees and dips near vertical to 70 degrees northwest.

The individual mineralized bed are up to 3.0 metres in width with an average of 1.8 metres of massive specular hematite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite. Drilling in 1955 cut the southern end of the vein, 1.3 metres in width, which assayed 1.03 grams per tonne gold, 171.4 grams per tonne silver, 7.7 per cent copper, and 0.6 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 12316).

Silver values apparently are directly related to the amount of chalcopyrite present and zinc with minor lead values appear to be directly related to the amount of specular hematite present.

In 1977, sampling of an epidote skarn assayed 154.0 grams per tonne silver, trace gold, 12.5 per cent zinc, 0.02 per cent lead, and 0.21 per cent copper. Also, a sample of the high-grade ore from the south dump assayed 518.0 grams per tonne silver, trace gold, 5.3 per cent copper, and 0.14 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 12316).

The Lakeview occurrence was originally held as the Three Lakes claim group and was reported to be staked and owned since 1910 by the Wilson brothers of Telkwa, British Columbia. In 1917 and 1918, the Tonopah Mining Company carried out surface stripping and sank three shallow shafts. The workings were dewatered and sampled by Cominco Ltd. in 1929.

In 1955, three holes were reportedly drilled by the Harvest Queen Mining Co. Between 1956 and 1967, stripping and trenching was carried out by Copper Ridge Silver Zinc Mines Ltd., Plateau Metals Ltd., and Rolling Hills Copper Mines Limited. In 1968, the property was reported to be owned by G.Y. Graham and P. Huber and under exploration by Buval Mines Ltd. (later Buval Executive Mining Industries Ltd.) with magnetometer, electromagnetic and geochemical surveys completed. From 1970 to 1973, the property was optioned by Buval to Annmar Mining Ltd. Exploration by Annmar included road building, trenching and six holes totalling 112 metres.

In 1977, John Bot of Smithers restaked the property and carried out a limited sampling program. Tom Schroeter (1981) of the British Columbia Ministry of Mines mapped and surface sampled old workings. He reported approximately 200 tomes of 'ore' remaining on the property in old dumps and samples containing up to 12.9 per cent copper, 12.6 per cent zinc, 1575 parts per million (ppm) lead and 518 ppm silver. In 1983, Butler Mountain Minerals optioned the property from John Bot and conducted 54 line kilometres of electromagnetics. The Vector Pulse electromagnetometer survey is reported (ca. 1983) to have detected a number of strong conductors and proposed several areas for diamond drilling. The area of the showings was found to lie between two strong narrow conductors. The recommended drill program was not completed by Butler Mountain and the claims were allowed to lapse.

Mr. Randy Hogg, as agent for Brera Holdings Ltd., restaked the Lakeview property in September 1987 with the claims subsequently acquired by Golden Vein Explorations Ltd. who conducted 50 line kilometres of magnetic, VLF-EM and soil geochemistry (1022 samples) surveys. A work program of further detailed soil sampling, trenching, electromagnetic surveys and core drilling was recommended but not completed.

In 2000, Lorne Warren and William Garner staked the Lakeview property to cover the historical showing.

In 2005, Cangold Ltd. acquired an option to earn 100 per cent interest in the Lakeview property. An exploration program was conducted during December 2005 and consisted of the drilling of seven NQ-size core holes, totalling 797 metres. The drillholes were drilled over a strike of 300 metres and all drillholes intersected the mineralized zone, but not all were well mineralized. Drillhole LV-05-01 intersected a 9.53 metre thick mineralized zone (80.23-89.76 metres) with a 9.33 metre section assaying 4.12 per cent zinc, 0.06 gram per tonne gold, 6.73 grams per tonne silver, and 1200 ppm (0.12 per cent) copper. True width is interpreted to be 4.6 metres. From calculations at the drill site, and from the drill sections, using the known coordinates of showings (North shaft) and the drillhole, dip of the mineralized zone is projected to be 70 degrees west (as interpreted from surface exposure) (Assessment Report 28337).
